Who We Are
Promesa Ministries was begun by Pastor Jared Lathem and his wife Pastora Lim Lathem.
After years in ministry within pre-established Anglo congregations within the United Methodist Church they felt God calling them to begin a brand new bi-lingual ministry to Latinos and Anglos in Tampa FL.

Reaching the Lost…
…in Tampa, Florida
The Bible is full of promises. The two big ones are: 1) if we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior we will spend eternity with him; 2) if we live according to the will of God we will live an abundant life here on earth. These two promises led us to begin Promesa Ministries. Promesa is Spanish for “promise” and we are passionate about sharing these promises with the Latino population in Tampa. Promesa Ministries finds our vision for ministry in Deuteronomy 30:16.
“For I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, and to keep his commands, decrees and laws; then you will live and increase, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land you are entering to possess.”
Model of Ministry
LOVE (Reaching the Lost)
Everything we do and everything we are called to do flows out of God’s love for us and our love for God. (1 John 4:19) “We love because he first loved us.” We are called to love God. Jesus tells us (Matthew 22:37) to, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” We believe our love for God must govern everything we do and this love must posses us fully. We believe in pursuing God with all our hearts, all our souls and our our minds. We practice our love for God by reaching out to the local community, showing the love of God and bringing others into a loving relationship with Jesus Christ. This means loving our neighbor as ourselves.
Walking with God implies a close relationship. When two people walk together they inevitably fall into sync with one another. They move their arms and legs in unison. This is how we view our relationship with God. Walking with God requires us to live according to His will. Promesa Ministries teaches holiness, living a holy, grace filled life, empowered by the Holy Spirit living in us. We teach discipleship and holiness through our personal relationships, small groups and accountability groups.
CONQUER (Fulfilling our Purpose)
We believe God has a call on every person’s life. Every person on earth is passionately loved by God and He wants the best for them. This is the promise found in Deuteronomy 30:16. If we will love God and walk with God we will be able to conquer the land to which we are called. This land may be a healed marriage, a new career, a clean life, a mended heart, etc. God is calling all of us somewhere. Promesa Ministries works with individuals to help them discover the call the Lord has on their life and then disciple them into that “new land” where they can thrive and live that abundant life.

A Bi-Lingual Ministry
Promesa Ministries is committed to being a bi-lingual ministry.
We were called to create a ministry that recognizes that many Latinos live in homes made up of first, second and third generations. Most second and third generation Latinos live a very “American” life, while first generation Latinos often still live as they did in their home country. Often first generation Latinos only speak Spanish. Many second and third generation Latinos feel more at home speaking English and are often more comfortable in an Anglo culture. Our desire is to create a ministry where first, second and third generation Latinos will all feel welcome and valued.
We also recognize that more and more marriages are between men and women of different races. Jared and Lim Lathem (the founders of Promesa Ministries) are Anglo and Latina. Throughout their marriage, Lim, who was born in Venezuela, had to adjust to the very different style of worship in the US than what she knew in Venezuela. It was their desire to create a ministry where mixed couples felt comfortable and at home.
We are under the spiritual covering of Pastor Carlos and Pastora Maria Pirona. Pastor Carlos is the President of the Wesleyan Seminary of Venezuela and pastor of the largest Methodist church in Venezuela. Pastora Maria is a doctor and the Medical Director at the Wesley Medical Center outside of Barquisimeto, Venezuela.
WHAT WE BELIEVE
In the one God, Creator and Sustainer of all things, infinite in love, perfect in judgments and unchanging in mercy. God exists eternally in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
In the divine inspiration, truthfulness and authority of both the Old and New Testaments, the only written Word of God. The Scriptures are the only infallible and sufficient rule of both faith and practice. The Holy Spirit enlivens the truth of God’s Word to all people of every age.
That human beings were created in the image of God. This image was marred in every part through the disobedience of our first parents, and fellowship with God was broken by sin. God, through prevenient grace, restores moral sensibility to all humankind and enable all to respond to His redemptive love and accept his saving grace, if they will.
That Jesus Christ is God’s incarnate Son, born of the virgin Mary, conceived by the Holy Spirit. He died for the sins of all, taking on Himself God’s judgment upon sin. He died and three days later bodily rose from the grave and ascended Heaven where He intercedes for us.
That the Holy Spirit is God present and active in the world. The Holy Spirit was given to believers in the Church in His fullness at Pentecost. By the Spirit, Christ lives in His church, the Gospel is proclaimed and the Kingdom of God is manifested in the world.
That God graciously justifies and regenerates all who trust in Jesus Christ. Saved by grace through faith children of God begin to live in holiness through the power of the Holy Spirit.
That God calls all believers to entire sanctification through full surrender and faith. Through sanctifying grace believers overcome sin and live in perfect love for God and neighbor.
That believers are assured that they are children of God through the inward witness of the Holy Spirit with their spirit, receive the gracious promises of the Word to believers and are enabled to bear the fruit of the Spirit.
That Christians are called to live in daily witness to the grace of God in Christ through both faith and action, word and deed. Believers witness to the will of God for justice, righteousness and mercy in all structures and relationships of human society.
That the church is the people of God redeemed by the grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord sharing corporately in the proclamation of the Word and celebrating the Sacraments of Baptism and The Lord’s Supper. The church is the Body of Christ visible and present in the world. Its primary mission is to make disciples of all the peoples of the world.
In the personal return of Jesus Christ, in the bodily resurrection of all persons, in final judgment and in eternal reward and punishment, the reign of Christ in the ultimate victory over Satan and all evil.
